My father also owned that record and I do remember listening to it and laughing because he was laughing. He also was at UNC-Chapel Hill the same time that Andy was there if I remember correctly. As for politics I am depressed and angry and feeling so many different emotions right now. I just hate the cruelty these folks champion. Where did cruelty come into their lives I have to wonder.

Wide-ranging, deep pockets of self-interested supporters: give me what I want and I’ll ignore the pain inflicted on everyone else. Until it hurts me—if it ever does — then I’ll blame someone else. Hard for people to admit they were wrong, even as an unelected billionaire guts their country. I’m a moderate Democrat. The status quo was not good for everyone. Meanwhile, we’ll keep calling congresspeople and hoping some balance will be achieved. I like football, so I’ll watch the SB with my kids and grandkids. Much to everyone’s horror, Henry is an (gulp!) Eagles fan! The only fans who booed Santa Claus and are proud of it. So we smile with gritted teeth and accept different beliefs in our own tiny world.

Spot on Jeanne. I understand maybe a little more than you do about football and this is the only football game I watch, with wings (from Trader Joe’s), salsa and chips and guacamole.

Halftime shows have never impressed me.

And I am depressed about what is happening. They all say he is doing everything he promised, so get over it. Things may need shaking up, but not this way. I don’t believe people really listened or understood. No one has a backbone anymore.

Great blog Jeanne. I know very little about football and rarely watch it on TV. Thinking perhaps for some fans it is about fellowship, being together and yelling and jumping up and down. Agree about the change in the banner, and also about where we are headed as a people, as a nation, as a global community, and about what we are doing to Mother Earth. I pray and hope. Bless us all, as everything seems to be falling apart. Most grateful to be living at Deerfield. Sad and praying for all the suffering so many people are experiencing. Apologies for going off track with my comments.

Your posting today brings back a flood of memories.

That was about the first Andy Griffith performance I remember as a child. It’s still funny. And we too have made mini feasts for Super Bowls some years. Long live Velveeta!

Your efforts to understand football reminded me of a blog I did some years ago, explaining why baseball and Japanese tea rituals have a lot in common. Someone wrote that it helped them better understand baseball. Maybe I will bring that one back when the baseball season starts. It’s just around the corner.

The thoughts you share on our national politics now is, of course, spot on. Cruelty and destruction are part of the plan, not side effects. They hope we will get overwhelmed and lie down to take it.

I definitely vote for a repeat of the baseball and Japanese tea ceremony post!

Bill, you said everything I was thinking as I read your post. I remember the Andy Griffith monologue too. The food Jeanne described made my mouth water. And I am with you both on our national politics and the changing of the banner at the game. The game officials and everyone need to speak truth to power regardless whether the president is there or now, as the Rev. Mariann Budde did.
