My children learned the Appleseed blessing in Kindergarten at Emmanuel Lutheran School. This brought back good memories. I'm almost certain that Alex is apple picking somewhere this fall.

I didn’t know apples and pears would last that long in the fridge! That is good to know. What is a crisper bin? I have 2 drawers in the bottom of my fridge for fruits and veggies. I would assume those are crisper bins?

Yes, those bottom bins are crisper bins. I have never stored fruit that long but the folks at the orchards assured me they will keep the fruit until Christmas. We will see!

I love apple cider donuts and the Johnny Appleseed blessing. Although in my Girl Scout days, that blessing was a "curse." It seems whenever we sang it, we would have rain later in the day. Now that's a good thing... or a bad thing!

A timely reflection on all things apple. I was just following a story yesterday that the apple community was hit very, very hard by Helene. Not so much crop damage as roads washed out and they lost most of thier tourist visits last year, and going slow this year. Many fingers are crossed for the turnout at the annual NC Apple Festival, running out of Hendersonville area this weekend. Likely to be a make or break story for many of these good folks.

Thanks for this reminder about how Helene affected the orchards. I had not realized how much revenue they lost right after the storm when people

Could not get to the orchards. All the more important to be customers this fall!

Before Bob died in Nov. 2021 our favorite orchard in Hendersonville was Stepps: https://steppapples.com/ They may have changed since then. They also had an orchard in Michigan so were familiar with the apples I grew up with - the ones I used for sauce, pies, and apple crisp. Have a fabulous recipe for apple crisp but am no longer able to make it. Sorry!
